Petite Shopping Gets Harder at LOFT

In January, I posted about Ann Taylor LOFT, and how their petite section is seriously lacking in size. I hated writing it. Because I’ve been an Ann Taylor and LOFT girl for years. Years.

Since then, their petite section has remained rather, well, petite. (I know. You’d think little-me-blogger would have more pull at Ann Taylor corporate.)

I went back on a few weeks ago for Girlymama’s Blogher Style party at Ann Taylor LOFT in Paoli, PA.

I want to be thoroughly clear that the service was stellar. The ladies were friendly and helpful, and they respected our space. Much appreciated. The store was in amazing condition and very clean and looked like it had just opened, rather than closing in just over an hour. Everything was neat and pretty. So LOFT Paoli gets an A+.

But the petite section. Sigh. Here’s what happened. I walked to the 1/4 of the store that was the sale section. I kid you not, when I tell you 1/4. So, I’m searching through. And searching. And searching. And I can’t find anything in my size. I asked a sales associate for help and she points me to the single rack of pants in the petite section that is on sale. And then she says there are a few things on a wall-rack behind it. Single rack vs. 1/4 store. I’m feeling bummed. I pulled a few things to try on, and then strolled through the rest of the petite section, in hopes of finding new fall fashion.

In my handbag, I had the mailer that arrived earlier that week. It was all about purples and pinks and blues and features colorful floral dresses. I glanced through the rest of the store. There are the dresses! There are the deep purples and blues and pinks!

And I look over at my friends at Blogher Style and they’re trying on these gorgeous deep colors and beautiful late summer florals. But for me? There’s nothing. Whether or not the petite section would later get these beautiful clothes was unknown. They weren’t in that week’s shipment with the rest of the new line in the regular sizes.

My previous LOFT rant took issue with the petite section’s size. Now its that Petites is being delayed or forgotten. Its as if Ann Taylor LOFT corporate thinks that petites don’t need to be as on-top of fashion as their regular-sized customers.

Are you a petite? Do you find frustration when you shop at stores and compare our tiny selection to regular sizes?

I have only just recently discovered that I *am* a petite size, and it’s actually opened up a whole new world of clothes shopping for me – stuff that actually fits! I’m sure that very soon, though, I’m going to start noticing how small the selection is in comparison…

Julie – come on down to the Ann Taylor Loft in University City – the petite section is a big portion of the store – and I know for a fact they have those gorgeous deep colored dresses you were talking about – as a matter of fact I was just shopping there w/ a friend and they had some great stuff in there that they didn’t have in the “regular” section! And BTW – I have the same problem on the opposite end of the spectrum – it’s really hard to find Long’s!

I absolutely have this problem! It drives me nuts when suit shopping, epecially. I’ll have 4 suits to choose from in my size, but there are 300 in the rest of the department store in non-petite sizing. SIGH.

LOFT was one of the few places I could rely on for good petite clothes, but as you indicated, it’s not been as good lately. I actually found better petite clothes at the regular Ann Taylor store the last time I was shopping. Between this and the size inflation…it’s such a shame that one of my favorite brands is now so hard to find in sizes that fit me!

Not only has Loft abandoned petites, they’ve abandoned women with feminine figures. I have a small waist and full hips. I am NOT overweight. I used to love the Julie fit pants but last year they changed them. Every pair of pants I tried on was puffy in the hips and crotch area but tight in the upper thigh. It made me look as if I was wearing diapers underneath.

I was also appalled by the way the advertisement models looked last Spring. They had upper arms that were skinnier than their elbow and looked anorexic and excessively photoshopped. Now they have included a model with a broad face in an attempt to make it seem as if they are listening but the figure is still the same.

This Fall’s offerings don’t tempt me either. Loose blousey tops with hip bands? NOT flattering on anyone except very skinny hipless people. I guess it might work for apple figures whose waists are bigger than their hips. At least there aren’t anymore tops with ruffles in the armpit.

Tip to LOFT (and everyone else): Watch Mad Men and read How to Have Style by Isaac Mizrahi to reorient yourself to what female looks like.

Thank you so much for responding. I agree with everything you are saying. They’re look is way off this year, very little of it is appealing and complimentary. Its a shame, because I do love the prices and the convenience. I wish the old look would come back.

Or, yeah, hire Isaac Mizrahi.

I still haven’t watched Mad Men, but so many people talk about it. Going to have to buy the season.

I am so glad that you liked my Flickr photo so much that you included it on this page.

I enjoy when people use my Creative Commons photos that I work hard on, but as I noted on Flickr (below the photo) I require that they provide me credit to my rentvine.com site.

Please add my link when you can.
Thanks, Dave
