Last week, on my organizer’s last visit, she pulled the big, heavy Yellow Pages off the top of the refrigerator and blew off the dust. “When’s the last time you opened this?” she asked.
“errr…” I stumbled.
I used to work in the side of marketing that placed ads in The Yellow Pages. With Pizza Hut as my client, I learned all about how placement in there worked, the benefits to sizes and locations and the costs involved. Its a business. But a dying one. Because, really? Who needs the Yellow Pages when we have the dubdubdub?
But we still have business cards. They’re traded and slid into handshakes, slipped into bags and wallets and then found months later with an “oh, yeah. right.” Sure, I’d love a business card scanner, or even the time to add all the card info into my phone or computer file, but who has that?

I found the best way to store business cards is two-fold. Tauni, from Its a Tradition, created this handy card holder for when you’re on the run and I just love the idea. I’m begging her to sell them on etsy because I so want to buy. I can see carrying these at conferences as well as in my handbag. In fact, having 2 rings of card-holders is a great idea: one for work and one for everyday life.
After returning home, I store the business-related cards in an old fashioned rolodex on my desk. There are so many of them that about once a quarter I go through and eliminate irrelevant ones. I’ve also forgone alphabetizing them and, instead, keep them by category. So the Toy PR companies are one section, bloggers are another, etc.
My local home and life related business cards I keep in my kitchen control center, aka junk drawer. I purchased a simple Clear Acrylic Business Card Stand that on may keep on her office desk to hold her own cards and load all the cards that I need in there. Inside are doctor’s office, handyman, the painter, the gym… all cards that I may need any time and need to keep within easy access. I go through this holder about twice a year and toss the cards I no longer need.
Any other cards laying around are recycled or placed in the kids’ art center. Because, really? I can look all that up on the internet.
