One of the biggest challenges in planning large-scale, school-wide events is keeping track of the RSVPs. In the "olden days" we had sign-up lists. We collected money in envelopes, then made spreadsheets, hoping to remember to include everyone who RSVP'd. People would pay in cash or checks, and both had the potential for being misplaced.
