Sure, our family has allergies, but I've never expected anyone to make exceptions for my kids. Want to serve ice cream? Blueberries? No problem. We know how to deal. But please give us some respect back and let us decide if we can be around the allergic food. Here's my response, as posted on Philly Moms Blog, to an announcement that children with allergies would be excluded from enrolling in a favorite extracurricular class. May 24, 2009 Berry allergies. Milk allergies. Peanut allergies. … [Read more...]
Help Me Rename My Series
This winter, when I sat in on a call with USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, I had no idea how inspired I was about to become. I've always been passionate about Physical Education and health classes, and keeping them in the classrooms of our schools. But what I didn't realize was just how important it would be for me to help others to realize the difference healthy eating makes in children. Further fed by Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution, I had a little revolution of my own, and my quick series has … [Read more...]
A quick Thank You to G-d, and to those amazing scientists making a cancer cure nearly possible
In my previous post about Shingles, I mentioned the What Ifs. I'm a major worrier and one of my biggest fears is death. Its a horrible topic for me and just way too personal to get into here. But I also really, really fear Cancer. Both my Grandmothers died of cancer: my maternal of lymphoma; paternal, leukemia. Prognosis for me: not good. So those what ifs that kept me up Tuesday night as I feared the worse about what later turned out to be Shingles? Cancer. I had nearly convinced myself that … [Read more...]

What do vitamins & healthy supplements really teach kids?
My kids are not soda drinkers. They're barely juice drinkers. In our house, its a lucky day when you get orange juice for breakfast. We're strictly water and milk. So when WAT-AAH contacted me to send samples for review at Mommies with Style, I wasn't sure about it. The purpose of WAT-AAH is to give children a hip and healthy alternative to soda and juices. It doesn't have coloring, artificial flavors or sugars. Actually, its completely pure. Of course, pure is what I already give to my … [Read more...]
All 'Bout Breastfeeding, part 1
I've been breastfeeding for nearly 2 and a half years. Not consistently. And not with the same kid, but 2 and a half years is a long time. Really long. When Big was born in 2003 I was terrified. I wanted to try breastfeeding, but I'm not so sure I had confidence in breastfeeding. I set a goal: I was going to try this and make it workn for 6 weeks. And, honestly, I didn't like it at first. No. Really. It was awkward. A bit uncomfortable. And I felt like I had a choice: completely … [Read more...]
